The Province of the Good Shepherd helps the poor and needy around the world through a variety of missions. Throughout 2017, the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God’s mission project is supporting reintegration and improving the quality of care at the Albergue San Juan de Dios de Quito Home.
The Albergue San Juan de Dios, located in the El Tejar Sector of Quito, was inaugurated December 9, 1987, to care for people abandoned by their families and sleeping in the streets, halls, and doorways of Quito. The residents are older adults with mental health issues with no family ties or homeless people displaced from other regions or neighboring countries as a result of political conflicts.
Thanks to our generous benefactors, the Order can provide breakfast, dinner, housing, training, and rehabilitation for an average of 300 needy people during the day, and 245 people during the night hours, and 55 live-in guests.
